Some questions about microfinance and self-help groups

The editorial examines how self-help groups and microfinance may not be what they were once intended to be - the silver bullet to eliminate poverty - and this could soon become a case of the cure being worse than the disease.

The first time translation from Spanish into English of a later story by Jorge Luis Borges, together with brief notes from the translator.

Jorge Luis Borges is in many ways a patron saint to Phalanx. When Phalanx set out to be a platform for debate, it was not in the expectation that debate would assist in a larger (if distant) project of social transformation but because of a faith in words simply as words. Words may have the power to 'transform reality' but, to literary people, language is perhaps inseparable from reality because of the impossibility of even approaching it without words. Borges was the supreme example of the literary person because he regarded 'himself' as virtually constructed by language. The Rose of Paracelsus is a parable which can be interpreted in many ways. One way would be as a reflection on the 'complicity' between reality and language, the 'trafficking' between 'world' and the 'word' which maintains the 'order of things'.
